Reminder: Legislative Update: Parental Rights and Education

82nd Nevada Legislative Session Update

Dear Powerful Parents and Community Members,

The 82nd Legislative session is underway and Power2Parent is hard at work tracking bills that could affect your rights as a parent and education. Hundreds of bills have already been introduced.

We know how busy family life can be! Nevada parents are working everyday to meet the demands of family and work.

Our goal is to help you stay informed and involved throughout this legislative session. Here's how Power2Parent will help you advocate for your families this session

  • Periodically, we will highlight bills that deserve attention, action or engagement in support or opposition.
  • Our team spends many hours reviewing bills and tracking hearings. If we see language that could diminish the traditional role of parents, or affect education, we will let you know.
  • We will send action alerts with information on how you can reach out to your legislator, or testify at a hearing.

We are closely watching the following bills, starting with the bad ones.

Parental Rights Bills

SB= Senate Bill

AB= Assembly Bill

Oppose:

SB74 - Grants grandparents and great-grandparents rights to their grand-children. . Parents have a fundamental right to direct the upbringing of their child. This bill would violate that right.

SB172- Revises provisions governing the ability of a minor to consent to certain health care services for the prevention of sexually transmitted diseases and pregnancy. Parents have a fundamental right to direct the medical treatment of their child. This is a dangerous bill for children.

SB163 - Requires certain health insurance to cover treatment of certain conditions relating to gender dysphoria, gender incongruence and other disorders of sexual development.

Power2Parent recommends the following amendment:

Amendment section 2 (a)-(d) and require written approval by both parents and/or all legal guardians.

Education Bills

Oppose:

AB175- Revises provisions governing boards of trustees of school districts (Yurek and Axelrod). CCSD and WCSD boards would no longer be all elected; proposes 4 elected and 3 appointed.

SB65- Requires a candidate for the office of trustee of a school district to obtain and file certain certifications; revising provisions governing certain training for professional development required for the members of boards of trustees of school districts and candidates for the office of trustee of a school district. Creates an undue barrier to obtain public office, could potentially create a barrier for parents.

Support:

AB65- This bill removes the requirement for a public school to provide a plan of action based on restorative justice. School violence has risen 47% since restorative justice discipline was implemented. This is a positive step towards school safety.

SB149 - Requires the board of trustees of each school district and the governing body of each charter school to prepare a plan to improve the proficiency of pupils in the subject area of mathematics. School Boards must have a plan to improve Math and Reading.

SB152 - Revises discipline of pupils, removes the age at which a student can receive progressive disciple. Current law only allows progressive discipline beginning at 11 yrs old.
