AB400- Governor Lombardo's School Choice Bill (AB400) Fulfills Campaign Promise to Give Nevada Families Expanded Access to Opportunity Scholarships and Increased Accountability in Education.
Governor Lombardo has introduced AB400 that significantly increases school choice access to families across the state of Nevada. AB400 benefits low-income families because it expands the Opportunity Scholarship program currently serving approximately 1500 Nevada students. Parents seeking alternative education options for their children will be able to pursue opportunities mostly available to affluent families. AB400 will improve educational choice and academic outcomes in the following ways:
- Creates the Office of School Choice to assist families in finding the best classroom for their child, and if needed, help them obtain scholarships for students.
- Raises the eligibility requirement for Opportunity Scholarships from 300% to 500% above the federally designated poverty level.
- Adds additional funding to expand Opportunity Scholarship availability to deserving families.
- Adds transportation dollars to charter schools.
In addition to providing expanded school choice, AB400 incentivizes teachers to obtain advanced degrees through the Nevada Teacher Advancement Scholarship Program. This bill also addresses academic accountability by allowing students who are not proficient in reading by 3rd grade to be retained.
Families overwhelmingly want more educational options, and this bill will provide that for them. Education is not a one-size-fits-all endeavor. AB400 will diversify our struggling education system and give lower income families a way to escape failing schools assigned by their zip codes.
