Call to Action: Tell SPCSA to approve charter school in low performing area

SPCSA (State Public Charter School Association) meeting
4/29/22 at 12:30 p.m
Dear Parents and Community Members,

Friday April 29th is the meeting of the SPCSA (State Public Charter School Association).

Nevada Department of Education
2080 E. Flamingo Road, Las Vegas, NV 89119
1st floor boardroom
Public comment begins at 12:30p

The application for the PTAA (Pioneer Technology & Arts Academy) STEAM Charter School was previously denied, and the purpose of this meeting is to reconsider the application for this charter school intended to serve students and families in high-need zip codes

Charter schools are "innovative public schools created to close the opportunity gap and deliver an excellent education to every student."

There is a strong case for more high performing charter schools in minority-majority zip codes. Statewide Charter schools are out performing Nevada public schools in every subject. For example, the 2019 8th graders scored higher in math on the NAEP (National Assessment for Educational Progress) test by 15 points.

Currently, the wait list for the 2022-2023 school year is more than 24,000 students. Parents are actively seeking ways to find the classroom and learning environment in which their child can thrive.

We need more charter schools because education is not a one-size-fits-all endeavor.

We need community members to testify in support of PTAA STEAM charter school so that more families can have school choice. If the zoned school is failing a student, having a different educational choice is empowering and closes the opportunity gap for those who do not have a different option.

The following are ways you can testify to show your support for choice: in person, by telephone utilizing the following conference call line: 1-312-584-2401; extension 3952176#, or submitted in writing via email at publiccomment@spcsa.nv.gov

Public comment begins at 12:30p on Friday April 29th.
