THE POWER OF PARENTING:

You Are Your Child's Most Important App
Showing your kids you love them is 2% effort and 98% putting down your phone.

-Collin Kartchner

Internet Crusader, Collin Kartchner, visited Las Vegas last week to discuss the effects of Social Media on our kids' mental health.  At the end of a life-changing Parent Education Night at American Preparatory Academy, which included a panel discussion from local experts, the attention turned to what parents could do in the face of a startling reality. When a few "oversight" apps were mentioned, like Bark and OurPact, which will help you monitor what is on your child's phone, Collin got up and very frankly said, "You are your kids best monitoring app." In the face of current political trends and proposed legislation his message could not have been more urgent for us to hear. No app, no piece of legislation, no school and no teacher can take the place of a parent.

There is no substitute for good parenting. Children need love, affection, attention and, according to Collin and his team, they need 8 hugs, for 8 seconds each, every day. We can't turn that over to the school, the government, or an app, hoping our kids will turn out emotionally stable and socially adjusted. Parents are the people who know their kids the best and who know what is best for them. Schools and science both tell us that number one factor in whether or not our children succeed is us. If we consider we are raising the next generation of leaders who will shape society, there could be no better perspective than from Harold B. Lee who says, "The most important work you will ever do will be within the walls of your own home."

If you didn't get the chance to see Collin live, you can watch his Tedx talk here.

See attached flyer for recommended resources from Collin and his team to help you on your parenting crusade.

Open Enrollment from CCSD:

"Open Enrollment provides parents of CCSD students with another choice. In the Spring of each year, schools with available seats will be advertised for the purpose of allowing parents/guardians of students who do not reside in these attendance zones to express interest in enrolling their child(ren) there. However, transportation is not provided for students selected to attend schools through CCSD's Open Enrollment."

We will send out more information on open enrollment when it becomes available.

Congratulations, Michelle Matecki!

Michelle is this month's Power2Teach winner of a $50 Amazon Gift Card and will be entered into our end of year $500 Grand Prize.

Michelle was nominated by her fellow colleagues who had this to say about her:

"Michelle has been teaching for 23 years. What stands out to me about Michelle is that she loves her students so much and they love her even more (if that is possible). She individualizes everything, so all of her kids experience success! She sends home a lot of information for her students' parents so that they can help their kids at home. She always, always has a super big smile on her face. She shows up no matter what because she doesn't want to let her students and colleagues down!"
Michelle teaches kindergarten at Priest Elementary School. She works tirelessly to find ways to help her students.

Do you have a teacher who has gone the extra mile for your child, or who has had an amazing influence on students in the State of Nevada?

Each month we will choose one teacher in Nevada who will be highlighted in our monthly P2P Newsletter and who will then be in the running to win our Grand Prize of  $500 to use for the next school year!

We love our Nevada teachers and we're excited to show our support in a big way!  Good Luck!
