On Thursday October 25th, the Legislative Commission voted 7-5 along party lines to pass the Gender Diverse policy.
Although, we knew this was the likely outcome of this key vote, we are still disappointed that legislators are willing to play party politics with our children's safety and ignore their fundamental rights.
As parents and stakeholders filed into the hearing room, it was encouraging to see the large number of people from all walks of life putting their name and their testimony on the record.
I had the opportunity to speak to the legislators, and let them know that our parents would not sit through another hearing where we knew the intended outcome. But, we would take our frustration out at the polls.
It was even more encouraging to step out of the elevator and find an incredible group of moms, dads, grandparents, teachers, pastors, and friends waiting in the lobby ready to go and vote.
I need to note that this policy absolutely infringes on the rights of students and parents in every public and charter school in the state. It is because of this infringement that we have attorneys standing by, ready to defend those rights in a court of law (for no cost to families). PLEASE, if you believe your student has been compelled to speak words they believe to be false or you have any other concerns about your rights and this policy, report through Power2Parent.org here: https://bit.ly/2Jm1TTX
Friends, there is only one way to stop policies like these from inundating our public school system. We must not stay home on election day. If you have not had the opportunity to vote this election cycle, take a friend or a neighbor and go today. Find your polling place here: https://www.nvsos.gov/votersearch/
Thank you as always for standing in the gap for our children.
