Dear Parents, When it comes to a child’s academic readiness, maturity, and mental health, no one knows that child better than their parents. That is why Power2Parent is launching SAY WHEN, a campaign to restore parents’ voices in decisions about when their children are ready to advance to the next grade. Nevada law establishes age six as the compulsory school-attendance age. Yet current laws and policies appear to place grade-retention decisions primarily in the hands of school administrators and, in certain circumstances, special education personnel, without ensuring parents have a meaningful role in the final decision. CCSD adopted a new retention policy in April 2025. Families who had already chosen to give their children an additional year were given little or no meaningful advance notice that this decision could later affect their children’s grade placement, transfer status, or athletic eligibility. Some families are now learning that: Their child may be required to skip a grade. An additional year of homeschooling may cause their child to be treated as a transfer student. Transfer and age-related rules may jeopardize athletic eligibility. A decision made in their child’s best interest may be disregarded by the district. Our central question is simple: Do we trust parents or not? Parents should have a meaningful say when an additional year is necessary for their child’s academic readiness, emotional well-being, maturity, or mental health. These deeply personal decisions should not be made by a system that does not know the child as well as the family does. Changing state law and district policy will be a long-term effort. We are examining every available path, including legislative reform, policy advocacy, public accountability, and potential legal action. And we are committed to pursuing changes that put parents back in the driver’s seat. But this fight will require resources.
