Legislative Update and Call to Action on AB205 and AB416

WHY WE WANT ASSEMBLY MEMBERS

TO VOTE "NO" ON AB205

Assembly Bill 205 (AB205) will change our current Opt-In system to Opt-Out. Opt-out means giving schools the blanket permission to teach sex-ed in any subject at any time by removing the permission slip process. It also makes it mandatory in that "if written refusal of the parent or guardian is not received, the pupil must attend each lesson of the course or unit." If this happens, it may not give you ample time to review curriculum in advance in order to help you make an informed choice on whether you want your child to attend or not.

WHY WE WANT ASSEMBLY MEMBERS TO VOTE NO ON AB416

Assembly Bill 416 (AB416) removes essential oversight from parents and places an unfair burden on families by requiring them to seek a judicial ruling to determine whether certain library materials are appropriate for their children. Parents appreciate local control. This legislation not only restricts parents' direct involvement in educational content and the ability to curate a library at their local school, but also sets an excessively high threshold - court intervention - to address parental concerns.
