BlueTooth Reviews: April Legislative Update

Assembly Bill 20 5 (AB205) would change Nevada's sex education policy from an opt-in system to an opt-out system. This shift would remove the requirement for direct parental consent, undermining your right to actively approve your child's participation in sex education.

Bottom Line: Our current opt-in to sex education system is working. The majority of parents sign and return permission forms. Most parents choose to opt-in to the sex ed portion of Health. Parents appreciate transparency; knowing when the material will be presented and who will be teaching it. Maintaining opt-in keeps parents informed and teachers accountable.

Assembly Bill 441 (AB441) would severely restrict the Opportunity Scholarship for Nevada families by blocking new students from receiving scholarships, discouraging donations to scholarship organizations, and limiting options for families.

Assembly Bill 416 (AB416) prevents pornographic content from being removed from school libraries by a School, School District, or School Employee. Under this bill, the only way to remove pornographic content from a public school library is for someone to "petition a court of competent jurisdiction to order the removal of the library material from circulation."

Email the Assembly Judiciary Committee Members and ask them to vote NO on AB416.

Schools, teachers, and librarians should have the right to remove obscene content from public school libraries. Pornographic material should be removed from a school library immediately.
