| Dear Powerful Parents,
On October 13th, the Board of Trustees voted to make sex education laws a legislative priority. They voted to take away parental consent for student participation.
Nevada statute requires teachers to obtain a signed permission slip from parents/guardians granting permission for their child to participate in sex-ed. This is called opt-in. Currently, 95% of parents are returning permission slips.
The trustees' obsessive focus on depriving parents a meaningful opportunity to know when sex-ed is being taught is illustrative of the contempt they have for parents and their partnership in their child's education.
Our national ranking of 49th, and dismal educational outcomes make these misguided priorities completely baffling. Statistics from last year show how poorly our kids are performing:
39% of CCSD students in 3rd grade are proficient in English
26.4% of CCSD students in 3-8 grade are proficient in math.
19.5% of 11th grade CCSD students are proficient in math.
28.7% of CCSD students graduate with a college and career ready diploma.
For 8 years, parents have fought for opt-in and every trustee in attendance, excluding Trustee Katie Williams, voted against parents.
Parents expect more from elected officials who are supposed to represent them, rather than special interest groups who see parents as a barrier rather than a partner in education.
Trustee Irene Cepeda, Trustee Danielle Ford, and Trustee Linda Cavazos, are up for re-election on November 8th. All three of them voted against parents.
