Important Agenda Items to Consider:
Agenda Item 5.02
Resolution 2021 Secure Storage Resolution (Guns)
Power2Parent agrees that safe gun storage is a critical component to owning a firearm. If the purpose of this resolution is to simply state the district's position, we have no objection. We are concerned about a privacy component. Parents would object to any effort by the district to require parents or students to publicly discuss their personal ownership of guns and how they store them in their homes. Simply put, this issue is not under the jurisdiction of the Clark County School District.
Item 5.04
CCSD's Anti-racism, Equity, and Inclusion Taskforce
The taskforce will create a district policy. It can be viewed here:
Anti-racism Task Force.
The deadline to apply to be on the external task force has been extended to June 25th, 2021. We encourage all to apply. A member of our board has applied, and we hope to work together with CCSD to ensure all parents and students are treated fairly. Power2Parent is against all forms of discrimination. It is important to note that as of now, this policy currently does not reflect adoption of any curriculum for students.
Item 5.09 - Grading system adjustments
CCSD Regulation 5121 was changed during the last meeting on June 10th. The following changes have been made to the grading system:
1) Students will have unlimited time to make up missed assignments.
2) Teachers will be required to re-teach anything the student has not mastered.
3) Teachers must assess if the student is missing assignments because they don't understand the material or if they simply chose not to do the assignment.
4) Students who consistently miss assignments can still receive a minimum C grade of 70%.
Some parents and teachers are concerned that these adjustments to grading policy lowers the bar and may lead to students graduating unprepared for the rigors of higher education.
Global High School for English Language Learners (ELL)
Global is dedicated to new English learners in CCSD. Educators and SOT members from Global have been attending CCSD meetings asking the board to keep that school a 4-year institution. CCSD has proposed that this school be changed to accommodate 11th and 12th grade students. Global High School offers another choice for parents with ELL students that need extra language support. If you would like to offer your support for maintaining Global HS as a 4-year resource, please call 702-799-1166 or email boardmtgcomments@nv.ccsd.net.
