Quick Action Center:
Today at 6:00 pm, the Clark County School District (CCSD) Board of Trustees will take a vote on the proposed reopening plan.
After months of research and gathering feedback from parents, Power2Parent is asking that the CCSD remove the hybrid learning option. Parents and educators should be given the opportunity to choose five full days in the classroom or a 100% online option.
We’re not alone in our request and recommendation. This week the director of the CDC along with the rest of the White House task force held a press conference to urge states to reopen schools in the fall.
For many of our most vulnerable families, keeping kids at home presents a greater risk to those students than any risks that the coronavirus presents. Nevada’s most vulnerable deserve the best they can receive too, and it’s our mission to help fight for them.
The cost of the proposed online program plus the cost to move each student to 1:1 technology, is over $83.6 million. With a current budget deficit of $166 million this plan as proposed would shortchange students and taxpayers. Not to mention -- There is not enough time to overcome the obstacles associated with the proposed plan namely transportation and child care.
Every other county in Nevada has put forth a plan to go back to school five days, except for the Clark County School District. Once again CCSD, which is a majority, minority school district, will not be educating many kids in the fall.
The governor must issue guidance and lift restrictions on school districts so that CCSD can make the decisions it needs to make to return to school in the fall.
This is not about politics, nor should it be. The White House Task Force is not alone in their suggestion to open schools in the fall -- The American Academy of pediatrics also issued their recommendations for reopening schools this week and they also believe that we should be back full-time in the classrooms.
We have to fight for what’s right for our children and for ALL CHILDREN OF NEVADA.
Thank you,
Erin Phillips
President
