Sex Education Bill has arrived. Please read! Please Forward!

Dear Powerful Parents,

We wanted to give you a quick legislative update.  As expected, we have finally seen a comprehensive sex education bill introduced into this legislative session - AB 295. According to this bill, control over curriculum and age of the student when sexual material is introduced will be up to the State and NOT up to parents in local school districts. Even more importantly-this law will not limit teaching sex education within is own course.  More of our initial concerns are:

  • Section 2:  The advisory committees and Board of Trustees in each district can authorize outside educators to teach the course. In other states, such as California, this has been done by Planned Parenthood educators and/or Planned Parenthood guest speakers. Click here to view our source right from Planned Parenthood's website: http://bit.ly/2uhYNJZ
  • Section 2, Subsection C:  Our opt-in to sex education will go away! Right now certain districts like CCSD in Southern Nevada, require a paper permission slip for your child to attend the class. This serves the primary purpose of notifying parents so they have the opportunity to view the curriculum first, give them the exact date the curriculum will be taught, and requires your signature for your student to attend. With a 95% return rate in CCSD of these permission slips, there is no reason to remove a successful policy. The hybrid-type "permission" proposed in this bill, will make it more difficult for parents to give their consent. Maintaining OPT-IN for sex-ed curriculum is VITAL in order to allow parents to know when sensitive topics like sex education are being taught.
  • Section 3:  Will guarantee that sex education and gender identity topics are taught in other subjects like English and History. Our question-What is the point of any type of opt-in? Parents will never know when and what is being taught in an entire school day.

Lastly, some school districts have Sex Education Advisory Committees (SEAC) comprised of 5 parents and 4 more community members that review and suggest guidelines to trustees for the sex education of their students. If AB 295 passes, the Nevada Department of Education will control curriculum and age of the student when sexual material is introduced and SEAC will become useless.

Parents and concerned community members-We MUST, yet again, send the message to legislators and Governor Sisolak that we do not want comprehensive sex education taught in our schools or mandated throughout the state. One size does not fit all and this should be left up to individual districts.

We will update you as more information becomes available and will notify you of upcoming meetings.  You can access the full text of the bill here.

SEX EDUCATION BACKGROUND IN NEVADA

Many of you know that Power2Parent was formed when a comprehensive sex-ed curriculum was introduced in the Clark County School District back in 2015 by an organization called SIECUS which introduced topics starting with lessons in Kindergarten about masturbation. As a group of parents newly forming, we rallied parents and that curriculum was defeated. Later, CCSD Trustees then attempted to remove our opt-in status (required permission slips) in order to circumvent parental voice. We again rallied parents and through your strong, collective voice, defeated that attempt. In the 2017 Nevada Legislative Session, a comprehensive sex-ed bill was introduced that would have mandated radical curriculum to every school in Nevada and completely removed our opt-in status. Through your hard work, dedication to keeping this out of schools, and your calls and emails....parents were once again victorious.

We need your voice now! Mark your calendars for Monday, March 18th-2:30pm!

Parents & Community Members,

We need your presence to voice your opinion Monday, March 18th at 2:30 pm!  SB179 (Senate Bill 179) would remove from Nevada law parental notification and consent for girls under the age of 18 to get an abortion. This means a teenage girl can become pregnant and obtain an abortion without anyone ever finding out. This is concerning to us as parents, who have to give our consent for that same child to be able to take a Tylenol for a headache, but it is also concerning to our community.

The state of Nevada has a big problem with sex trafficking. According to a 2016 report by the National Human Trafficking Hotline, Las Vegas was ranked 6th out of US cities based on incoming reports of human trafficking. If a minor has been lured into a sex trafficking ring, she can be sexually exploited, become pregnant and be taken to an abortion provider for a forced abortion. Removing obvious protections for girls like informed consent-understanding the emotional and physical risks associated with abortionand parental notification guarantees these girls will continue to be victimized by traffickers. SB179 aids criminals and further allows crime rings operate without consequence.

In an article published March 13, 2009 in the Nevada Independent, Lt. Nate Chio, who leads the Special Investigations Section at LVMPD said "this industry (is) spiraling out of control despite the best efforts of the LVMPD".

Please do everything you can to attend this hearing so we can send the message to legislators that they MUST protect our children in Nevada from this dangerous bill.  There is mention of a possible amendment which is further reason to attend in person. Abortion is dangerous; children need their parents.

It is scheduled for Monday March 18 at 2:30PM:

-Room 4412 of the Grant Sawyer State Office Building, 555 E. Washington Ave., Las Vegas, NV.

-Room 2149 of the Legislative Building, 401 S. Carson St., Carson City, NV.
