How To: Let's Resolve to Create A Family Mission Statement in 2024

All successful companies have a mission statement to keep them focused, so why are we leaving the most important organization we will ever be a part of, our families, without one?

In “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Families,” Stephen Covey details how applying the principles of the habits to our families will result in a nurturing family culture that weathers challenges in a productive way.

Covey’s “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” is lauded as one of the most influential books of the twentieth century. In this application of the habits to the family, he applies his principles to what he is most passionate about:

I firmly believe that family is the building block of society and that the most important work you or I will ever do will be within our family relationships. If we as a society were to work with all our might to improve all other areas of life and yet neglect the family, it would be analogous to spending our time straightening the chairs on the deck of a great ship in the midst of sinking. (p. xii)

In this season of resolutions, why not focus our attention on creating a family plan that has the potential of creating lasting generational change?

AI For Edu: Claude by Anthropic

Claude is one of the preeminent competitors to large language model ChatGPT. It operates as an AI assistant, and is designed to be used by adults (18+).

Several factors set Claude apart, but one of the standout differences is that its parent company, Anthropic, is committed to the development of constitutional AI. Constitutional AI seeks to operate within legal and ethical frameworks.

Claude can be used to develop a schooling framework for homeschooling or supplemental tutoring. For example, I used Claude to create a summer homeschooling curriculum for a five-year-old boy.

I designated how many days I wanted to teach and asked for recommended books for daily lesson plans. With prompting, Claude gave me suggested lessons for each day with a timing breakdown for each activity. The suggested lessons included books, songs and games to support learning objectives.

At my request, Claude also incorporated classical education principles as well strategies for teaching a student with ADHD. The assistant gave valuable feedback in both areas.

The basic version of Claude is free.

Donor Spotlight:

Guy Paul Nohra

Guy Paul Nohra has been an avid supporter of Power2Parent since becoming acquainted with the organization in 2022.

During this time, Nohra, a successful entrepreneur within the biotech field, was running for governor here in Nevada. He met CEO Erin Phillips at a Basque Fry and has since invested in Power2Parent on multiple fronts, donating as well as serving on the organization’s Board of Directors.

In your mind, what makes Power2Parent a worthy organization to be involved with?

Nohra: At this time, given the importance of education for our children with the addition of Covid interruptions that caused so much damage to their education, on top of the fact that the Clark County School District is ranked 50 in the country, we need all of the help we can get to stem the tide going on right now.

What is your current passion pursuit?

Nohra: I am catching my breath. The election was a big deal. I would like to engage in some kind of public service, probably helping and mentoring young entrepreneurs.

From your unique entrepreneurial perspective, why is it critical to empower parents to be the number one teacher and advocate for their children?

Nohra: It is amazing that we have to ask ourselves that question. Who is the most responsible for our children in this world other than their parents in terms of shaping their morals and values? What is more important than educating our children to thrive out there in the world as productive members of society?

How many children do you have?

Nohra: I have two beautiful, adult daughters.

What is your parental superpower?

Nohra: Reading their minds – so I don’t have to waste time figuring out what they are thinking!

Parents Need To Know: Child Sex Trafficking in Nevada

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department recovered 124 children who were being trafficked locally in 2023.

Detectives from the Vice Bureau presented to a room of approximately 80 community members at a Human Trafficking Prevention Event held at the Centennial Hills YMCA on Wednesday.

The event was hosted by Las Vegas City Councilwoman Nancy E. Brune and Councilwoman Victoria Seaman.

Power2Parent partnered with community leaders to publicize that Nevada ranks second in the United States in human trafficking.

Broken down per capita, six cases occur per 100,000 people according to a 2024 report by World Population Review. Nevada trails only Mississippi in the amount of trafficking cases.

We want to equip parents with the information and tools to keep our children safe, Seaman said.

“Our children are not for sale,” she added.

A decade ago, individuals looking to exploit children approached them in parks and malls, but now social media is the main means of contacting victims. Groomers are largely preying on children through apps such as Snapchat, Instagram and Facebook, detectives said.
