Legislative update on bills we are watching.

Bill Watch Update: What's New and What We Need to Do.

Dear powerful parents and community members,

We are watching the legislature closely so you can continue to manage your busy family life and remain informed and active. Our goal is to provide convenient and time effective ways to contact lawmakers and express support and opposition on bills that affect families. Our elected officials know that parents in Nevada are engaged and informed. Here is an update on the bills we are watching:

OPPOSE

  • AB175 Appointed School Board: adds four non-voting members to the board of trustees; one appointed by the county commissioners and three from the three most populous city councils. Appointed school board positions take the power away from parents to vote for and hold trustees accountable. Register your opposition here.

  • AB357 Sex education: implements expansive, explicit sex education and changes parental permission for participation from opt-in to opt-out. If you haven't already, please submit your opinion here. Tell lawmakers to reject AB357.

  • SB439 Sex education: allows sexuality education to be taught in every course and allows outside educators (not accountable to parents) to teach the course (see sections 17 and 18).

  • SB344 Defunds charter schools: Attacks school choice and charter schools by restricting local jurisdictions from funding charter schools. (see sections 9 and 10) This bill attempts to defund charter schools giving families fewer choices in education. Tell lawmakers to reject SB344 here.

SUPPORT

  • AB330 Safer and Supportive Schools Act: Allows teachers to remove a student from the classroom if their behavior puts others at risk. This bill received bi-partisan support with amendment, and has moved to the Senate Education Committee. If you have not submitted your opinion already, please do so here. Tell lawmakers to support AB330.

  • AB400 Education, Achievement, Opportunity and Accountability Act: Parents champion this bill put forth by Governor Lombardo that will give families educational choice to escape failing schools in their zip code. Tell lawmakers to support school choice here.

We appreciate all the letters and testimonies that have been submitted. Let's keep up the fight to preserve families and parental rights in Nevada. Stay tuned to our social media channels, FaceBook, Twitter, Instagram for updates and action alerts.
