Governor Lombardo Announces Expansion of School Choice

Governor Lombardo Announces Expansion of School Choice.

Dear Powerful Parents,

Parents in Nevada were excited to hear discussions about expanding school choice by our new Governor, Joe Lombardo, in his State of the State address. Families from diverse backgrounds and across the political spectrum are seeing other states evolve from a one-size-fits-all education model to an expanded choice model that better prepares students for our rapidly changing economy and workforce needs. Voters care deeply about accountability and outcomes and for too long Nevada has been at the bottom of national education rankings. We need a new direction in education in Nevada.

Governor Lombardo has pledged to be the “education governor” and the people who elected him will be watching to see how he will expand school choice and implement accountability measures in our public schools. Pledging two billion in additional funding for public schools won’t amount to anything without accountability. Voters have seen increased funding to public schools with no measurable improvement play out before. Establishing the Office of School Choice is an excellent start and added funding to Opportunity Scholarships for low-income families will also benefit some students. However, meaningful school choice means that funding follows the student so that any parent, no matter where they live or their income, can choose the classroom that works for their child. Currently, the wealthy and well-connected are the only ones who enjoy true freedom of educational choice because they can afford to pay for it. Parents know better than multi-degreed “experts” or government officials what classroom fits their child’s needs and how they can be best prepared for their future.

Power2Parent is committed to empowering parents to direct the education of their children. We look forward to working with our newly elected officials in the coming legislative session to improve quality access to education in Nevada.
