| Powerful Parents,
This week marks the start of the 81st legislative session. While this has already been a year like no other, this session will be unique as well.
This legislative session will begin as a closed session. No lobbyists or members of the public will be allowed in the building. We saw this closed model during the multiple special sessions called by the Governor last summer and fall.
While closed sessions will limit in-person participation, hearings will be held virtually. Those interested in testifying for or against legislation will be able to call in to testify. We will keep you updated on how you can engage in the legislative process.
As the foremost parental rights organization in the state of Nevada, Power2Parent is committed to advocating for laws that strengthen those rights. We will be monitoring legislation and alerting the public when bills are introduced that could weaken parents’ ability to advocate for their children and families.
Our Legislative Priorities for this session are as follows:
Maintain Opt-In: - Parents currently have the right to know, and must give written consent (permission slip) when subjects about sexuality are taught at school. There are organizations who would like to change opt-in to opt-out. Opt-out circumvents parents and transparency in sex education curriculum. We will work to protect opt-in this session.
School Choice: (Fund Students, Not Institutions) - In the 2019 session, the legislature placed a moratorium on all new charter schools. Parents are best suited to know what is best for their child’s education which is why we need more choices. When schools need to compete for students, quality in education rises. We would like to see the moratorium on charter schools lifted to give parents more choices when it comes to educating our children.
- In the 2019 session, the legislature capped the tax percentage that funded Nevada Choice Scholarship (opportunity scholarship.) Nearly 1,000 low income kids lost their scholarships. We will work with legislators to Identify innovative sources for funding students, and restore the tax incentive to fund opportunity scholarships.
- We support freedom for municipalities, townships and unincorporated areas to secede from CCSD. We need smaller districts.
Transparency in Education: - Public schools should be required to post learning materials and activities for student instruction including textbooks, reading materials, videos, digital materials and websites.
- Parents should be able to easily access all learning materials so they understand what will be taught in every grade.
