We know that both mothers and fathers are important in child rearing and development, but did you know that fathers have an impact on children beyond what mothers provide? In his book, Do Fathers Matter? What Science Is Telling Us About the Parent We've Overlooked, Paul Raeburn combs through countless studies on the impact of a father on children and adolescents. Here are the results from a few of the studies:
- Children whose fathers play with them, read to them, take them on outings, and help care for them have fewer behavioral problems in the early school years, and less likelihood of delinquency or criminal behavior as adolescents
- Children with involved fathers are less likely to smoke as teenagers
- Fathers who read their children when they are young and ask them about school when they are older are more likely to prevent depression and other psychological ailments in the kids decades later
| | | | | - The closer adolescents feel to their fathers, the less likely they will be to engage in delinquent behavior - such as stealing, running away, disorderly conduct, violence, and the use of weapons
- The closer adolescents feel to their fathers, the less likely they will be to use drugs
- Adolescents who had a good relationship with their parents had less need to seek outside relationships that could lead to risky behavior
| - Girls who have a warm relationship with their fathers and spent a lot of time with them in the first five to seven years of their lives, had a reduced risk of early puberty, early initiation of sex, and teen pregnancy
- Children whose fathers who are more knowledgeable about their friends and activities are less likely to engage in risky sexual behaviors

These are questions your school board will be voting on soon. The School Board Trustees are YOUR elected officials and are there to represent YOUR interest. But, they can't represent your interest if you don't let them know what you think. Please take the time to email your Trustee to let her know your opinion on school resuming in the fall. | | | | | Do you feel a call to become more informed and involved in advocating for your children? There's a lot of ground to cover and we can use your help! Much of the help we need can be done from home.
We follow school board meetings and agendas to communicate news to parents that will affect their children in schools. We monitor state legislation to make sure we have a heads up on any bills that will impact our ability to parent our children. We advocate for school choice, so parents are able to choose the education option that best fits the needs of their children. We work with schools and community groups to give parents tools and resources to help them with parenting, and much more! | | School may be "out" for the summer, but the importance of continued learning can't be stated enough. If children aren't practicing the skills they learned during the school year they can forget what was taught and start the next school year at a deficit, having to relearn what was taught the previous year before they are ready start new material. Research suggests 20 minutes of reading each day and 20 minutes of math practice each day can help students stay on track for the next school year.

| | | UPDATED: CCSD FOOD DISTRIBUTION | CCSD plans to continue providing meals to students through June 30th from 7 a.m. until 10 a.m. and are free to any child age 2 - 18. Parents and guardians will now be able to pick up meals for their children without their child/children present.
| | | WCSD FREE FOOD DISTRIBUTION SITES | Working in partnership, the Washoe County School District and Food Bank of Northern Nevada are providing free meals for all children, aged 18 and under, at the following sites. You do not need to provide identification or information about your family to receive these free meals.
| | | CONGRATULATIONS BRIAN MEYERS! | Brian is this month's Power2Teach winner of a $50 Amazon gift card and will be entered into our end of year $500 grand prize drawing. | | Brian is an 8th grade English Language Arts teacher at Winnemucca Junior High School in the Humboldt County School District.
Brian was nominated by Dawn Hagness who had this to say about him: "Mr. Brian Myers is an incredibly talented, passionate and caring Junior High English teacher! First and foremost, he cares about his students. He truly takes the time to know them, their interests, and uses his passion for writing to engage with them. Our 8th grader found a connection with him early this year and has deemed him her favorite teacher! He has helped her find her passion for writing again (which she is incredibly talented) but he reminds her of that ability and her innate talent and that she has the ability to use her voice for so much great in the world! People like that who take the time to make strong connections in person and one-on one can make such a difference for one child. We know because Brian is the difference for our daughter!"
