Together is a wonderful place to be.

-A.A. Mine in Winnie-the-Poo
This time last year, none of us would have seen a quarantine coming. But while this strange new reality has dealt a blow to us, there's been a huge benefit to families we didn't see coming either. Instead of being isolated as individuals, we've been able to remain together in our respective family units in our own households. Sporting events, school, and special events have been canceled leaving most of us with virtually nothing on our schedules. This stand still has given us a chance to turn our attention back to our family and our time together.

This time together might be one of the greatest opportunities our society could ask for and if we use it to our advantage, we might find it's the solution to some of our biggest problems.

According to the Population Studies Center at the University of Michigan, “The amount of time children spent eating meals at home is the single biggest predictor of better academic achievement and fewer behavioral problems. Mealtime is more influential in the lives of children than time spent in school, studying, attending religious services, or playing sports.”

While all of these other good activities are canceled, studies show that what happens in our home will have a greater impact on our children than these other pursuits.
“Children who eat dinner together with their families are less likely to drink, smoke, do drugs, get pregnant, commit suicide, and develop eating disorders”. Bruce Feiler, The Secrets of Happy Families, 2013

POWER2TEACH
MONTHLY GIFT CARD WINNER
CONGRATULATIONS NICK DEMOTT!
Nick is this month's Power2Teach winner of a $50 Amazon gift card and will be entered into our end of year $500 grand prize drawing.
He was nominated by Stephanie Harris, a fellow 3rd grade teacher, who had this to say about him:

"Mr. DeMott goes above and beyond to help students and staff at Walter Bracken to be successful. When I first started at the school, I was going through the CCSD ARL program and Mr. DeMott was instrumental in helping me with the program. He was constantly available to answer questions, help with planning and offer advice on classroom management techniques. He also helped me learn the systems in place within the school and how to set up my classroom for success. He has continued to be a very helpful colleague and has a wealth of experience that he is eager and willing to share. I often see him mentoring student teachers, as well as other teachers who are new to our school. In addition, Mr. DeMott shows his passion and commitment to education through the various classes he takes outside school hours to further his professional development, often sharing new ideas at staff meetings. He also helps to train teachers on how to teach coding to students and even teaches several classes on coding to students throughout the year. He is definitely an asset to Walter Bracken and an excellent example of a professional, dedicated, hardworking teacher."
