"A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies...The man who never reads lives only one." -George R. R. Martin
World Read Aloud Day falls on February 1st and this month is a great time for us to find ways to engage with our kids in reading.
One study by economists in 2006 concluded that "children whose parents had read to them when they were five and showed an interest in their education at age ten were significantly less likely to be in poverty at age thirty."
What were some of your favorite stories growing up? What books would you like to read again if given the chance? Challenge yourself to grab a copy from the local library and share that story with your family this month. Here are some ideas to get you started reading aloud with your children:
Take turns reading a page or chapter with your child
Have your child read the book aloud to you
Read the book aloud to your child
Listen to the audio book together
Besides just being fun, reading together is a great chance to spend time together as a family and to build our relationship with our kids. The studies confirm the benefits! "Reading aloud to young children, particularly in an engaging manner, promotes emergent literacy and language development and supports the relationship between child and parent. In addition it can promote a love for reading which is even more important than improving specific literacy skills." (Reading aloud to children: The evidence, Archives of Disease in Childhood, August 2008)
So this month, find your favorite story and share it!
Help us build game libraries in our schools! We've received requests from several local schools to help them build Family Game Libraries for students to check out games and puzzles to take home to play with their families. We'd love your help to make it happen.
As you're doing your spring cleaning, channel your inner Marie Kondo and pass along your board games and puzzles to us where they will be used to spark much joy in the lives of families of local schools. Email us at info@power2parent.org and we'll come pick them up!

Cindee is this month's Power2Teach winner of a $50 Amazon gift card and will be entered into our end of year $500 grand prize.
She was nominated by Napaul Cavazos who had this to say about her:
"Cindee has been with CCSD for roughly 17 years. She truly has a passion for developing our youth today in becoming the best people they can possibly be. Unfortunately teacher salaries today are not what they should be, but this has not stopped her from doing what she does. I remember her telling me that being a teacher is one of the most hard but rewarding careers; because it is one of the only careers that can help create a better future for not only the individual (student) but for society. In addition to that she has truly touched the hearts and changed the lives of some in the community."
Cindee works at Lois & Jerry Tarkanian Middle School as a computer literacy, English as a Second Language, and Media teacher.
Do you have a teacher who has gone the extra mile for your child, or who has had an amazing influence on students in the State of Nevada?
Each month we will choose one teacher in Nevada who will be highlighted in our monthly P2P Newsletter and who will then be in the running to win our grand prize of $500 to use for the next school year!
We love our Nevada teachers and we're excited to show our support in a big way! Good Luck!
The 80th (2019) Session of the Nevada Legislature adjourned on June 4, 2019 and will resume again February 2021.
We are now in the interim period between legislative sessions, which means we're headed into the next election cycle. We'll prepare for the elections and the next session by looking for the best candidates who will support legislation that supports parents and helps strengthen families in Nevada. We will go through an endorsement process and keep you posted on the results.
Looking for the perfect gift for your family and friends? According to experts at the University of Toronto, you're better off giving your family a meaningful experience rather than a toy, or material gift. It turns out that giving your children an experience this holiday season instead of the typical "thing" forges deeper family bonds. Researchers explain that "An experiential gift elicits a strong emotional response when a recipient consumes it and is more intensely emotional than a material possession."
If you're looking for some fun family time together, we've partnered with #PogoPass to offer our #Power2Parent followers the gift of a Pogo Pass at a discounted price. What is the Pogo Pass? It's a 12 month membership (from date of purchase) that provides you FREE access to all your favorite #family activities in the #LasVegas area.
