THE POWER OF PARENTING:
New Beginnings

"Every new beginning comes from some other beginnings end." ~ Seneca

The month of January was named after Janus, the Roman God of beginnings and endings. He is depicted as having two faces because of his ability to simultaneously look back at the past and look forward to the future. January was then placed at the beginning of the year as a symbol of looking back at and reflecting on the previous year and looking forward to the year to come. This principal is generally played out in our own lives when we set our New Year's resolutions and strive to do things better in the upcoming year than we did in the previous year.

When considering resolutions, we might also consider setting a resolution for our family. Sean Covey, author and motivational guru suggests starting with a "family mission statement." According to Covey, the family mission statement can help strengthen family values by creating shared goals. It can also help families come closer together and by giving each member a sense of belonging and purpose.

How do we create a family mission statement? Take one evening and ask your family questions like:

  • "What does our family stand for?

  • "What do we value?"

  • "What is most important to us?"

  • "What do we want it to feel like in our home?"

Once you've identified the things your family values the most, you can create a short, one sentence, mission statement that illustrates what you would like your family and home environment to look like. It may say something like, "Our family always comes first," or "Our home is a place of love and respect."

Your family's mission statement is a great way to bring your family closer together this year because everyone gets to have a say in the mission statement. By creating buy-in from the very beginning, you're increasing the chances that family members will live by the mission statement.

So, as we reflect on 2019 and set our goals for 2020, let's make our family mission statement a part of our resolutions and goal setting process by considering how we want our family and home to be.

"January is the month for dreaming." - Jean Hersey

POWER2TEACH

Congratulations Rebbecca Gergel!

Rebbecca is this month's Power2Teach winner of a $50 Amazon gift card and will be entered into our end of year $500 grand prize.

Rebbecca is an 8th grade Science Teacher at
Faiss Middle School. She was nominated by Lynda Wiszt who had this to say about her:

"Rebbecca Gergel is an awesome teacher! She teaches middle-school science which she absolutely loves doing. Her passion for science excites her students to also love science, and to have fun while they are learning it. Her desire to always improve her abilities is seen in all aspects of her life as she seeks training, materials, etc. to enhance her skills and knowledge. She is an inspiration to her fellow teachers, and loved by all. She was inspired to teach by her grandfather who was a life-long teacher with CCSD."

Do you have a teacher who has gone the extra mile for your child, or who has had an amazing influence on students in the State of Nevada?

Each month we will choose one teacher in Nevada who will be highlighted in our monthly P2P Newsletter and who will then be in the running to win our grand prize of $500 to use for the next school year!

We love our Nevada teachers and we're excited to show our support in a big way!  Good Luck!

NOMINATE A TEACHER TODAY
ELECTION SEASON

The 80th (2019) Session of the Nevada Legislature adjourned on June 4, 2019 and will resume again February 2021.

We are now in the interim period between legislative sessions, which means we're headed into the next election cycle. We'll prepare for the elections and the next session by looking for the best candidates who will support legislation that supports parents and helps strengthen families in Nevada. We will go through an endorsement process and keep you posted on the results.

GIVE YOUR FAMILY THE GIFT OF TIME TOGETHER

Looking for the perfect gift for your family and friends? According to experts at the University of Toronto, you're better off giving your family a meaningful experience rather than a toy, or material gift. It turns out that giving your children an experience this holiday season instead of the typical "thing" forges deeper family bonds. Researchers explain that "An experiential gift elicits a strong emotional response when a recipient consumes it and is more intensely emotional than a material possession."

If you're looking for some fun family time together, we've partnered with #PogoPass to offer our #Power2Parent followers the gift of a Pogo Pass at a discounted price. What is the Pogo Pass? It's a 12 month membership (from date of purchase) that provides you FREE access to all your favorite #family activities in the #LasVegas area.
