THE POWER OF PARENTING:

"We are trying to protect people who don't understand they are in danger and who know more about technology than we do."
-Detective Sean Taylor
LVMPD Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force

The Power2Parent Internet Safety Night at the Vistas Community Center was a success! Detective Sean Taylor of the Las Vegas Metro Police Department's Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and Chelsea Brown of Digital Mom Talk gave outstanding presentations on how predators are targeting your kids in the digital age and what you as a parent can do about it. Apps and filters are a common first response, but both Detective Taylor and Chelsea Brown made it clear that there is no substitute for good parenting.

Did you miss the class? Here are some highlights:

Who is most at risk for being preyed upon?
-Ages 8-14
-Prolonged/Frequent use of technology
-No standards or expectations set by the parents
-No limitations set by the parents

What are the hazardous characteristics of apps that prey on children:

-Chat and/or Video Chat Feature
-No Verification
-Vanishing Content
-Foreign
-Interactive with Other Apps
-Location Software
-Encryption

What can you do to help keep your children safe?

-Keep the communication lines open
-Set Expectations and enforce consequences

-Set limitation - access, location, time & frequency
-Charge devices at night in the parent's room
-Empathize
-Hover, but don't stalk - otherwise they will get a new profile that you don't know about
-Install filters - ***But there is no substitute for a good parent monitoring that device****

-Discuss proper relationships - "mutual friends" does not establish credibility
-Don't post vacation pictures when you're on vacation
-No devices in the bathroom or bedroom
-No one should have access to your network/internet if you don't own the device

LEGISLATIVE UPDATES

The 80th (2019) Session of the Nevada Legislature adjourned on June 4, 2019 and will resume again February 2021.

We are now in the interim period between legislative sessions, which means we're headed into the next election cycle. We'll prepare for the elections and the next session by looking for the best candidates who will support legislation that supports parents and helps strengthen families in Nevada. We will go through an endorsement process and keep you posted on the results.

Family Dinner Fiesta at Frijoles & Frescas!

Our Power2Parent and Mrs. Nevada-America Family Dinner Event at Frijoles & Frescas was a success! Our goal was to bring awareness to the importance family dinner has in the lives of children.

Whether it's grabbing takeout, having a picnic in the park or having a quick dessert together, the time we spend with our children has more of a measurable impact on our children than any other event in their lives.

"When you start to look at the research you realize all the things you worry about as a parent can be improved just by sitting down to regular dinners."
Laurie David, author of The Family Dinner.

Thank you to Frijoles & Frescas for hosting the event!

Congratulations Debra Stancliff!

Debra is this month's Power2Teach winner of a $50 Amazon gift card and will be entered into our end of year $500 grand prize.

Debra was nominated by Melissa Gardner who had this to say about her:

"I am nominating Mrs Debra Stancliff at Blue Diamond Elementary. She has so much love and compassion for her students. She was a lifesaver for my oldest child in second and third grade. He struggled with being at school and she was so patient with him and was able to get through to him with reading. He was a non reader at the start of second grade, he just wasn't getting it, and she somehow got through to him and he was on grade level before the end of that year. We love her and her passion for teaching children."

Do you have a teacher who has gone the extra mile for your child, or who has had an amazing influence on students in the State of Nevada?

Each month we will choose one teacher in Nevada who will be highlighted in our monthly P2P Newsletter and who will then be in the running to win our grand prize of $500 to use for the next school year!

We love our Nevada teachers and we're excited to show our support in a big way!  Good Luck!
