THE POWER OF PARENTING:

"Sometimes our grandmas and grandpas are like grand-angels." -Lexie Saige

We've long known that a parent is the most influential person in a child's life and that the relationship between parent and child is the most important relationship a child can have. So it's not surprising, according to Dr. Karl Pillemer of Cornell University, that the emotional relationship between grandparents and their grandchildren is the second most important relationship a child can have.

Grandparents serve many important roles in the lives of children and since roughly three-quarters of parents will become grandparents, it's important to examine the role grandparents play in the family.

Grandparents are invaluable in raising their grandchildren. Increasingly, grandparents find themselves providing part-time care for their grandchildren and even full legal custody. As a result, they help teach life skills such as cooking, cleaning, gardening and repairs that help build the character of their grandchildren.

Knowing family history, which is often passed down by grandparents, is also important to the emotional development of grandchildren. In a study from Emory University, researchers measured children's knowledge about their family history and found that the more that children knew about their families, the higher their self-esteem and sense of control over their lives. Sara Duke is a psychologist who specializes in children with learning disabilities and further explains that, "The ones who know a lot about their families tend to do better when they face challenges." Her husband, Dr. Marshall Duke - a prominent psychologist at Emory University in Atlanta said, "Children who have the most self-confidence have a strong 'intergenerational self.' They know they belong to something bigger than themselves." Even if one or more of the grandparents of a family may have passed, we can still honor their legacy by telling family stories.  it's important to remember them and their rich history.

It's important that we foster the grandparent-grandchild relationship even into adulthood. Sara M. Moorman, an assistant professor in the Department of Sociology and the Institute on Aging at Boston College explains, "We found that an emotionally close grandparent-adult grandchild relationship was associated with fewer symptoms of depression for both generations. The greater emotional support grandparents and adult grandchildren received from one another, the better their psychological health."

When distance is a factor, letters, phone calls, and video chats can help build the grandparent-grandchild relationship. Building the love and friendship between the generations has significant benefits to both generations.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATES

GREAT NEWS!

There have been a number of bills brought by this legislature that would have diminished your right to parent your children and we are pleased to report that we have been successful in amending or killing many of these bad bills!

AB295—A comprehensive sexuality education bill intended to force every district in Nevada to adopt an expansive and graphic sex ed curriculum and mandate 'opt-out', which eliminates express parental permission before teaching lessons.

This bill died without receiving a hearing, we believe based on a number of factors including CCSD opposition based on 2015 parents surveyed and decidedly voted to maintain 'opt-in'. See CCSD statement here.

(CSE vs. SRA— Why Sexual Risk Avoidance works.)

AB430--Could have allowed the Division of Child and Family Services to establish a  family home visiting  system by governmental entities to visit homes of children  during early childhood.

This bill was heavily amended to remove any of the mandates and will only exist as a study of potential benefits for certain underserved populations.

AB123—This bill expanded reporting requirements for children exempt from vaccines for religious or medical reasons, to the Department of Health and Human Services as well as the trustee of that district.

This bill is officially dead.

SB179—This bill eliminated parental notification requirements that are in Nevada State Statute. It decriminalizes every aspect of abortion and It also eliminates important informed consent requirements like asking a woman her age and verifying she is not under coercion.

This bill was amended to keep parental notification in Nevada State Statute. This will allow us to potentially pass legislation down the road that will fix this law and allow Nevada, once again, to protect girls through parental notification requirements.

AB156— Appoints Educational Guardians for children who are in need of help.

An amendment was added to this bill that clarified the language to clarify that this applies to children taken into custody of Child Protective Services and CAN include the parent if possible.

SB551A payroll tax that adds approximately $9.5 million to the Opportunity Scholarship, bringing the amount of money for the program to approximately $10 million a year, however it also eliminates from statute Nevada's ESA Program.

Although funding was added, the Opportunity Scholarship program has been capped. No new funding will be allowed and no additional students will be admitted into the program, or allowed to access the funds. Democrats removed the Educational Savings Account language showing their anti-parental choice bias.

We are a non-partisan group who represents parents and families in Nevada. We support legislation that seeks to strengthen families and we support legislators who support parents and strengthening the family. We will continue to monitor legislation for issues that impact parents and families.

Washoe County School District Sex-Ed Curriculum Update

Parents showed up in force at the WCSD school board meeting. Approximately 200 parents, grandparents, and community members flooded the meeting, making it the most attended board meeting EVER. Trustees and parents sat through 4.5 hours of public comment.

The message to the trustees was clear, the majority of comments were in opposition to the proposed curriculum.

Trustees voted 5-2 to PASS the proposed SHARE curriculum.

TRUSTEES HAVE SENT A CLEAR MESSAGE: Those who voted to pass this curriculum were unmoved by the hours of parental voice in opposition who were the overwhelming majority. The voice of the majority should rule, curriculum removed off the table, and considerations should have been made for better curriculum that would have fit the needs of all students in a more responsible way. Trustees have chosen to push forward with sex-ed curriculum JUST to meet their goal of having it instituted by fall 2019.

PARENTS IT IS NOW YOUR TURN TO VOTE.
Please take a moment to email these trustees. Thank the two who listened to parents and tell the other 5 trustees that we will hold them accountable come election time!

Thank you for showing up and speaking loudly. This is not over and we ask you to continue to stand with us and spread the word. This is our 5th year fighting for parents in Nevada and we will never stop until the message is sent that we come first in the lives of our children.
