CALL TO ACTION: Regulation to Change Social Studies in Nevada

Dear Powerful Parents,

As an addendum to our previous email regarding the gender diverse regulation, we wanted to alert you to one more important agenda item (R056-17) up for debate at the Legislative Commission meeting this Thursday, August 30, 2018.

Power2Parent has looked at the new Social Studies standards implemented this year, and there are some concerns we wanted to highlight with regard to the new Social Studies curriculum, and the implementation process used by Superintendent Steve Canavero.

The Nevada Department of Education (NVDOE) has revamped the Social Studies curriculum standards pursuant to AB234 passed in 2015.  The intent of the law was to add "multicultural education, including, without limitation, information relating to contributions made by men and women from various racial and ethnic backgrounds."

As we have looked at the new standards, we are most concerned that the NVDOE has removed any reference to the Pledge of Allegiance, important U.S. holidays, patriotic activities, foundational principles in  U.S. history, geography, economics, civics, memorization of important dates and facts, and appropriate multicultural instruction.

The new multiculturalism instruction is more extreme, borderline hostile, and discriminatory toward one general ethnic group. These new standards emphasize a politically charged social justice philosophy and is highly partisan.  Nothing in AB234 requires this type of political slant to be added to Social Studies in Nevada.

In addition to the disturbing changes in curriculum, it has come to our attention that  the NVDOE sent out the Social Studies standards to school districts in June 2018. The guiding documents for the new standards were not even finished.  Dr. Canavero directed districts to implement this new curriculum this year before the regulation was written or approved by the Legislative Commission.  The process is corrupt as well.

There is so much we can do as parents and educators to instill in our children a love of country, freedom, and a sense of personal responsibility to contribute to the betterment of our nation.  The things that unite our people such as patriotic holidays, understanding the founding values of our nation, and historical greatness of men and women who sacrificed all to leave a legacy of freedom for generations will be lost in our classrooms.  In its place will be a loss of national identity, a departure from our rich history, and political philosophies that divide us along racial and ethnic lines.

We urge you to contact these legislators and ask them to revoke these standards that were improperly implemented, and restore important subjects that were removed.
