Parental Advisory: Explicit Content? Candra Evans' Story

Parental Advocacy and CCSD Elections
Dear Powerful Parents and Supporters,

Many of you are aware of Candra Evans whose 15 year-old daughter was given a pornographic monologue to memorize and perform in front of her class. Candra spoke out at a recent school board meeting and her mic was cut when she tried to read her daughter's assignment in public testimony.

Why is vulgar material is fine in a classroom full of minors, but not in a board room full of adults?

This story struck a nerve nationally. The shocking lack of judgment teachers display when they assign inappropriate material to children damages the trust parents have with teachers. When Candra had a meeting with the teacher, she was unapologetic. She stood by the assignment and said she had "reviewed and edited the worst parts out." A teacher who has no moral judgment is bad enough, but what was worse is they way CCSD Trustees treated Candra. She wanted that assignment on the record. When she testified she was cut off, chided for using vulgar language, and bullied by audience members and online by Trustee Danielle Ford and others,

There has been a lot of local and national coverage about this incident. Many have commented on this story without knowing the facts.The facts of this situation matter because informed parents are wiser advocates for their own children. Please read and share our article which explains the events as they happened.

CCSD Trustee Races and P2P Endorsements

Early voting begins on May 28th. There are three CCSD Trustees that are up for re-election: Trustee Irene Cepeda (District D), Trustee Danielle Ford (District F), and Trustee Linda Cavazos (District G).

In many ways, our trustees have more impact on our children and education than higher profile political offices.

We are wrapping up interviews with candidates who will eventually get our endorsement. Please watch for our trustee endorsements in the next day or two. We will endorse candidates who understand that parent involvement is key to student success and want to work in partnership with families.

Manny Kess Calls For More Education Oversight

Nevada State Treasurer Candidate Manny Kess Calls for More Education Oversight

Kess releases draft legislation calling for an Independent Office of the Inspector General within the Treasurer's Office

Today Republican Manny Kess, candidate for Nevada State Treasurer, announced plans to introduce more oversight to Nevada's education budget. Kess shares the years-long concerns of countless Nevada families regarding the lack of effective fiscal oversight of its public school system, which currently ranks among the nation's worst in student learning despite per-pupil spending levels comparable to those of other, better performing states.
"Each year school districts across the state receive more taxpayer dollars, yet families are not seeing the benefits promised by the education establishment. Nevadans have a right to know this fundamental question: Why have frequent increases for K-12 funding failed to actually improve Nevada's schools?

An Office of the Inspector General within the State Treasurer's Office would not only provide a truly independent analysis of K-12 spending, but also ensure counterbalance between the Governor's office, regardless of party. That is the kind of transparency and accountability we shouldn't only ask the government for, but demand from it."

- Manny Kess
The key elements of the proposal are as follows:

1.
Establish an Independent Office of the Inspector General within the Nevada State Treasurer's Office, where the term "independent" serves to inform that any appointed Inspector General can only be terminated for cause (not at-will);

2. The Inspector General will be appointed by the Nevada State Treasurer, who will choose from a selection of three well-qualified nominees who have been vetted and submitted by Nevada's Legislative Commission;

3. The Inspector General's auditing authorities will not extend beyond local K-12 county school districts;

4. The term of the Inspector General shall be four years, and they can be re-appointed with the consent of the Legislative Commission and the Nevada State Treasurer; and

5. Qualifications to serve as Inspector General will include extensive knowledge and experience in the financial accounting and auditing fields

ABOUT MANNY KESS

Manny Kess believes in the American dream, because he's lived it, and he has Nevada to thank for that.

Growing up, Manny's dream was to serve his country as a Naval Aviator. He was on track to achieve that dream at the US Naval Academy when tragedy struck. Manny's father passed away unexpectedly and he made the difficult choice to give up his dream of serving his country in order to return home and serve his family instead.

Manny didn't let adversity stand in his way. He began building a new dream and went into the hospitality industry where he owned and operated a successful restaurant in New York. It was there that Manny first learned the challenges of making payroll, paying vendors on time, and turning a profit.

His restaurant business was thriving until tragedy struck again in the form of the Great Recession. After enduring several years of overburdensome regulations and a tax system that wasn't transparent, Kess lost the restaurant and business he worked so hard to build up. By the end of the 2000's, Manny had lost his childhood dream, his dad, and ultimately lost everything.

Thankfully Manny's story didn't end there, instead it was just getting started.

Manny left New York to come to Nevada. He founded a new company, and through hard work, determination, and entrepreneurial spirit, grew it to over six million dollars in annual revenue today. His business is one of the top-ranked hospitality companies in Nevada and his success story has been recognized by multiple print, online, and radio publications, including Forbes Magazine.

Today he is not only a business owner, but also an investor an entrepreneur. Manny has partial ownership in several businesses that include a restaurant, a firearms manufacturer, a high end interior design firm, and a sports nutrition company among others. Kess has Nevada to thank for this success and now he wants to give back to the state that gave him so much opportunity.
