Unprofessional Behavior By School Board President Cavazos

Trustee President Linda Cavazos Should Be Removed
CCSD Board President Linda Cavazos is attempting to remove the Superintendent without cause for the second time this year.

The October 28th board meeting is supposed to be focused on the Anti-racist Policy. After 18 months of failed distance learning, Trustee Cavazos is again using the power of her office to take attention away from our most pressing challenge: providing education that delivers results to our students.

This CCSD Board President is conducting herself in an unprofessional manner and should be removed immediately for the following reasons:

  • Exhibited hostile behavior toward representatives from the Southern Nevada Health District (SNHD) when they recommended that schools be re-opened.

  • Voted to keep students home in-spite of shocking reports of student suicide and mental health emergencies and against the recommendations of the SNHD

  • Denied the veracity of suicide and mental health reports and the dire need to get our students back to in-person learning and voted to keep them home

  • Promoted messaging from the National School Board Association (NSBA) labeling parents who speak out on issues that affect their children "domestic terrorists" and personally calling parents "insurrectionists"

  • Gives open platform in board meetings to hostile groups that have threatened harm to parents, CCSD employees, and community members over differences in policy implementation

  • Is unconcerned with the dismal proficiency levels for our African American students -10.2% are proficient in English and 3.9% in math. Hispanic outcomes are not much better at 15.7% and 7.4% respectively (Review Journal: Just 4% of black students in Las Vegas area schools tested proficient in math, V.Joecks, 10/24/21)

These are just a few examples of the hostile and divisive and failed leadership style Trustee Cavazos embraces as Board President.

Her latest effort to remove Dr. Jara without cause will direct resources away from our children with an expensive search for a new Superintendent and leave this district without meaningful leadership for an undetermined amount of time.

Trustee Cavazos is more focused on lecturing about her ideological ideas rather than offering solutions to CCSD's inability to provide adequate education despite millions of dollars added to budgets over the past 5 years.

Parents and the community have no confidence in Trustee Cavazos. Our children need our advocacy. Our kids deserve steady leadership. Rather than removing Dr. Jara without cause, Linda Cavazos should step down.

We call on parents and stakeholders to write to the Board of Trustees and urge them to remove Linda Cavazos as President of the Board of Trustees.

Plan to attend the board meeting on October 28th at 5:00 pm at the Greer Education Building located at 2832 East Flamingo Road, Las Vegas.

For those who would like to testify may sign up to speak during regular business hours this week by calling 702-799-1072
