Parents Are Fuming!

Parents Are Fuming
Our country is more divided than ever, and we are seeing these divisions play out in real time at our local school board meetings. One of the biggest issues that we are grappling with is “Critical Race Theory” also referred to as “Critical Social Justice Theory.”

Critical Race Theory (CRT) places racism at the center of its framework. It contends that society as a whole and the systems within are set up to give preferential treatment to white people.

Parents are being told on one hand, “We are not teaching critical race theory, it's a college level course,” and on the other hand, “Parents opposing CRT do not want accurate history of oppressed people taught, and you are racist.”

Some teachers and activists show up at school board meetings angrily testifying that we need to teach accurate history even if it makes us uncomfortable. According to them, history must be taught from the worldview that our nation is fundamentally racist and rooted in oppression.

Parents are showing up at meetings arguing that trustees should listen to reason and teach accurate history from the worldview that our "national founding was a landmark moment in history, in which, for the first time a society would be defined by human liberty, justice, and equality before the law.”

Parents need reassurance that the district and the trustees understand that their concern is not about teaching accurate history.

In an article written by Star Parker entitled “School Choice is the Only Option in a Divided Nation” she states:

“If half the country disagrees with the other half about “core American values,” what exactly can we expect public schools receiving federal funds to teach regarding the nature and purpose of our Constitution or about our nation’s history?”

After school board trustees voted in March to pass an “Anti-racism” policy, we informed parents that this was only a policy to address any discrimination that could prevent students from feeling safe at school and realizing their full potential. We were assured that there was no curriculum being introduced by this district.

Yet, all over the country, including the Washoe County School District, critical social justice curriculum is being introduced. Last week the nation’s largest teachers union, NEA approved a plan to promote critical race theory in all 50 states and 14,000 local school districts. Their resolution stated the following:

B. Provide an already created, in depth, study that critiques empire, white supremacy, anti-blackness, anti-Indigeneity, racism, patriarchy, cisheteropatriarchy, capitalism, ableism, anthropocentrism, and other forms of power and oppression at the intersections of our society, and that we oppose attempts to ban critical race theory and/ or The 1619 Project.”

The term “anti-racist” has been made popular in recent years by Ibram X. Kendi, the author of the book “How to be an Anti-Racist”. According to Wikipedia: Anti-racism has taken various forms such as consciousness-raising activities aimed at educating whites about the ways they may perpetuate racism..."

The term anti-racist insinuates that some type of activity and “work” is required. The term has become a lightening rod for controversy, and this is why parents are angry and distrustful of the CCSD schools board's decision to create an "Anti-Racism" policy.

If you have watched the past few school board meetings you have seen division and anger play out. While our organization has not taken any official stance on CRT, or sent anyone to the school board meetings to speak on it, individuals and groups have launched a targeted campaign against P2P to discredit us and further marginalize parents voices.

What these groups are doing to us, encouraged by elected officials' continued deference to them, is exactly what parents are afraid will happen to their kids when an anti-racism policy is implemented. Parents do not want their children taught that

  1. Individuals are not responsible for their own behavior, but are guilty by association (aka skin color).
  2. Any objection to a different worldview will be seen as violence.

Power2Parent has been standing for parental rights from the beginning, regardless of skin color, socio-economic status, political ideology, religion, etc.

We are not pushed by the waves of ever changing, socio-political movements. We are on the side of parents. We stand for the right for parents to raise their children the way THEY see fit.

Our job is not to tell parents what to believe, or what they should or should not teach their children.

The Power2Parent Union exists to empower parents to advocate for their children. With a collective voice, we can unify to stand in defense of our children against activist groups that think they know what is best.

We offer trainings on how to effectively and respectfully testify at public meetings, how to leverage social media to communicate their message, and how to build relationships with elected officials (they work for us).

We cannot do it without your help.
Membership to the Power2Parent Union is only $25/ year.

We are building a parent army across this state. If you haven’t already joined the Union, do it today! Invite 5 friends to join and you can make an enormous impact on the future of our children’s education.

You are the parent. It is time to rise up and stand in the gap for our kids.

Join the union. Attend a school board meeting. Call/ email your trustee. Sign up for our upcoming trainings, and educate yourself on the issues that affect your kids.

Respectfully,

Erin Phillips
President,
