Parental Rights Amendment to the U.S. Constitution

**Mark your Calendars**

We are excited to announce that we have partnered with the national organization ParentalRights.org for the launch of their White House Petition for a Parental Rights Amendment to the Constitution. It is imperative that we preserve the fundamental right to parent our children by amending the US Constitution so that families can be fully protected under the law. This is a non-partisan effort that is crucial to all families in America.

Petition will go live:
October 24th-November 22nd
Goal:
Over 100,000 signatures

We will provide a link to our website, social media, and email so stay tuned and be prepared to share the petition with friends and family!

One last thing:

Your donations are the sole reason we've been able to stand up for parents in Nevada for 5 years now! Donate today to help protect the rights of parents so we can continue to work toward strengthening families.

Strong Families=Strong Communities

Help us meet our goal of $5,000 before the petition goes live!

THE POWER OF PARENTING:
Back to Basics

You will never look back on life and think, "I spent too much time with my kids."
-Author Unknown

Back to school means back to practices, back to homework, back to after school activities, and back to the daily grind. While it can be fun to start a new school year full of new opportunities and adventures, it can also mean we may lose sight of what is most important to us.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) explains that, "there are risks in the current focus only on achievement, after-school enrichment programs, increased homework, concerns about test performance, and college acceptance. The stressful effects of this approach often result in the later development of anxiety and depression and a lack of creativity." Although we as parents may have the best of intentions to help our children succeed, if we forget about developing the emotional piece of our children we may end up short-changing them in the end.

The AAP goes on to say that "Parental guilt has led to competition over who can schedule more "enrichment opportunities" for their children. As a result, there is little time left in the day for children's free play, for parental reading to children, or for family meal times." Free play, time with parents and family meals are crucial in the development of our children.

Here's what the experts say about the basics:
-Play with parents promotes social-emotional, cognitive, language, and self-regulation skills. (AAP Report, The Power of Play: A Pediatric Role in Enhancing Development in Young Children)

-Reading aloud to children 15 minutes every day not only promotes literacy and language development, but is essential for brain development in children. It also supports the relationship between the parent and child by building memories and promoting engagement.

-"Mealtime is more influential in the lives of children than time spent in school, studying, attending religious services, or playing sports." (Population Studies Center at the University of Michigan)

"Consistent and individualized attention given to each child will significantly reduce misbehavior. Regular and wholesome family time will also give siblings the opportunity to interact with each other in a positive way." (Felicity Bauer, Siblings Without Rivalry)

So as we're starting this new school year, full of new excitement and new opportunity, let's take another look at our schedule to make sure we're making time for the things that matter the most.

Digital Mom Talk October Workshops:

Each week from October 1, 2019 through October 31, 2019, Chelsea will be doing a 10 minute live workshop teaching you skills you need to know: types of cyber bullying, when cyber bullying crosses the legal line, how to respond to bullies and more.

Click here to view the schedule of LIVE Workshops

Chelsea's goal is to help parents realize the tools they have available go beyond "Let's talk to people. Let's stand up and say no. Let's block the bully." because that doesn't always work-especially where cyberbullying is concerned. She wants parents to understand the fine line that exists between cyberbullying and defamation of character, extortion, online harassment, and other criminal charges.

LEGISLATIVE UPDATES

The 80th (2019) Session of the Nevada Legislature adjourned on June 4, 2019 and will resume again February 2021.

We are now in the interim period between legislative sessions, which means we're headed into the next election cycle. We'll prepare for the elections and the next session by looking for the best candidates who will support legislation that supports parents and helps strengthen families in Nevada. We will go through an endorsement process and keep you posted on the results.

Opportunity Scholarship:

Students in Nevada are losing their previously awarded Opportunity Scholarships which gave low and middle-income families the ability to choose a better education for their  children. As a result, families have retained legal counsel to help regain their scholarships and keep educational freedom alive in Nevada. If your child has lost their scholarship, please contact us and we will direct you to the law firm representing parents.

Congratulations Robert Ballard!

Robert is this month's Power2Teach winner of a $50 Amazon gift card and will be entered into our end of year $500 grand prize.

Robert was nominated by Lori Biunno who had this to say about him:

"I nominate my son's 4th grade teacher Mr. Ballard. After 25 years in a different profession, he decided his passion was to teach. He went back to school to become an accredited teacher. His excitement to teach is infectious. He keeps the students interested and engaged, which is no easy feat considering he has 37 kids in his class. Yet he never complains. He is always in a good mood, and always available to help either student or parent, all day even on weekends if necessary. He truly deserves to be recognized."

Robert teaches 4th Grade at Lamping Elementary School

Do you have a teacher who has gone the extra mile for your child, or who has had an amazing influence on students in the State of Nevada?

Each month we will choose one teacher in Nevada who will be highlighted in our monthly P2P Newsletter and who will then be in the running to win our grand prize of $500 to use for the next school year!

We love our Nevada teachers and we're excited to show our support in a big way!  Good Luck!
